Hurgar la Herida (Twist the Knife) is a mystery-drama that follows Henry and his newly-blind daughter, Sonia, in their journey to scatter the ashes of his late wife and her beloved mother. During the intimate ceremony, Sonia asks her dad to describe in detail the last photograph taken of her with her mother, which prompts a cathartic response mixed with grief and guilt, as his wife’s death and his daughter's recent loss of sight were a consequence of his poor decisions one fateful night. As a result, mystery and more tragedy ensue, and an ominous veil hangs over them in the forest.
Synopsis
Director's Statement
Catharsis refers to the release, and hence relief, from repressed thoughts and emotions, resulting in a sense of renewal and restoration. It is an essential element in the healing process of a painful situation, such as the loss of a loved one. However, in these situations, families can fall into a state of psychological equilibrium in order to reduce tension, wherein one might avoid displaying their authentic selves or sharing their feelings and pain. This could result in a lack of communication, loss of trust, and an overall repression of emotions. With the inability to release or regulate emotions, a common counter-reaction is to assume archetypes that allow some sense of control and expression without the fear of judgment or rejection by our family members. Through symbols, this film represents the unfamiliar aspects of these archetypes and its instability in the grieving process.
